CALGARY – Thousands of volunteers gathered at McMahon Stadium on Monday, to show their support for those impacted by days of devastating flooding.
The City of Calgary posted the need for volunteers on their blog at 1:45 a.m., and the information spread quickly through social media and local news organizations.
People slathered on the sunscreen and sprayed themselves with bug spray, then made their way to McMahon Stadium for the 10 a.m. call time.
The response was overwhelming, with hundreds and hundreds of good samaritans gathering to help.

“This is unbelievable,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “This is the spirit of Canada, the spirit of Calgary. We knew this would happen. Every one of us is willing to roll up our sleeves and help our neighbours.”
“It’s the Calgary thing to do,” adds CEMA Chief Burrell. “I am not a Calgarian originally, I have been here eight years now. One thing Calgarians do better thanIi have seen any place in Canada is volunteer.

“I mean, we put out the call and look at it, it’s phenomenal.”
Volunteers were bused to different sites around the city, to help give information booklets to evacuees returning home.
