‘Monsters University’ conquers ‘World War Z’ at box office

TORONTO — A prequel to the animated hit Monsters Inc. scared off zombies to take top spot at the box office on its opening weekend.

Monsters University earned an estimated $82 million in the U.S. and Canada, leaving Brad Pitt’s World War Z in second place with $66 million.

Monsters University made another $54 million in overseas markets, bringing its total to $136.5 million.

Monsters Inc., which opened in 2001, earned a whopping $563 million worldwide.

Man of Steel, fell to third place in its second weekend, earning $41.2 million. The Superman flick has grossed more than $210 million to date.

The comedy This is the End, starring Canadians Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and Michael Cera, took in $13 million over the weekend to bring its total to $58 million.

The last spot in the Top 5 belonged to Now You See Me, which earned another $7.9 million to boost its haul to nearly $95 million.
