British Columbians offer help in Calgary flooding

British Columbians and Canadians alike have stepped up to offer whatever help they can to those struggling through the Calgary floods.

“We’ve had 12 volunteers from B.C. with years and years of experience and extensive training already deploy out,” said Canadian Red Cross disaster manager, Lise Anne Pierce, adding that dozens more have submit applications and are undergoing training to be sent out as well.

According to the executive director of B.C. Highway Operations, Norm Parkes, many aides have been sent to Calgary including first responders, ambulance support, health support, and others from the housing,environment and transportation ministries.

“Alberta has offered help to us in the past and we offer help to them,” said Parkes. “We’re there to help each other.”

Whether it’s a small local disaster, or an international one like Haiti or the tsunami, Canada always offers a helping hand, said Pierce.

“The wonderful thing about being Canadian is that Canadians are generous by nature,” she said. “Canadians always step up to the  plate and donate everything that they’re able to manage, so we really appreciate that.”
