Death at Edmonton Institution city’s 12th homicide of 2011

Edmonton police have ruled the death of an inmate at the Edmonton Institution a homicide.

Officers responded to the prison at 9:30 pm on Saturday, February 26th after correctional officers were called to an emergency call activated from within the inmate’s single accommodation cell.

Staff performed CPR on the inmate, and he was transported to hospital.

The victim has been identified as Gyozo Victor Barasso, 45. Barasso was serving four years and two months for Robbery – All Others (x2), Assault with a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

An autopsy was conducted on Barasso, and the cause of death has been determined to be multiple stab wounds.

The Edmonton Institution was placed into lockdown following the incident, and remains in lockdown as of Tuesday. All visits to the facility have been cancelled.

The Edmonton Institution is a maximum facility prison, and currently holds 279 inmates.
