Unprecedented water levels in Anglin Lake put residents on high alert

ANGLIN LAKE, Sask. – Residents in northern Saskatchewan remain hopeful as high levels of precipitation and spring runoff threatens to flood communities.

May Janzen has owned property in the Anglin Lake area for over four decades. Despite the allure of the tightly bundled trees and vast bodies of water, 2013 has been a year like no other.

“We’ve never had 12 inches of rain in such a short time,” said Janzen.

In just a couple of days, 125 mm of rain fell in the area, leaving lakes and rivers well above normal levels. In Anglin Lake, the water reached unprecedented levels, a foot above where it should be this time of year, according to the Water Security Agency.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The District of Lakeland was very quick to respond and they brought four generators and hoses and diverted the water as quickly as they could,” Janzen said.

Despite a slight downtick in business at the Land of the Loon resort where she works, she hopes things will get better and the weather improves.

Less than an hour away, crews were busy installing a brand new culvert where water had ravaged a portion of Highway 2, north of the Waskesiu turnoff.

“We’ll be looking at the structure of all the highways in the area. I’m told the 900 series is of particular concern in the area, so the integrity of them will be tested,” said Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff.

The highway was reopened Monday night, but residents in the area remain on alert as the threat of more rainfall continues to loom later in the week.
