A standoff southeast of Edmonton that left one man dead is now being investigated by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.

A 54-year-old Strathcona County man was shot and killed by RCMP officers after an eight-hour standoff on Sunday.

Officers got a call around 9 a.m. Sunday about a man threatening to hurt himself with a loaded shotgun at his home near Range Road 223 and Township Road 510.

Edmonton’s K Division Emergency Response Team was called in to help.

Several homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution while officers spent the day constantly communicating with the man.

But they were unable to convince him to give up his weapon.

The man came out of his house just before 5 p.m. and started walking towards police with the shotgun.

That’s when four RCMP officers fired their weapons, killing the man.

The guns have been seized as part of ASIRT’s investigation.

"We’ll be able to determine how many times he was struck, precisely how many rounds were fired at this point we are unsure, that’s part of the investigation," said Clifton Purvis, executive director of ASIRT. "At this point I can only say that numerous rounds were fired by the RCMP during this incident."

The man’s name has not been released.

The fatal shooting is the second involving Alberta RCMP this month.

On Jan. 10, a 62-year-old man was shot in Canmore after police pulled him over in connection with a series of robberies in the community.

Investigators discovered the handgun the man waved at officers before he was shot, was fake.

ASIRT is an independent body that investigates incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death
