The man convicted of kidnapping a three-year-old boy in southeastern B.C. nearly two years ago is expected to appear in a Cranbrook courtroom today.

Randall Hopley abducted Kienan Hebert from his home in Sparwood in September 2011 — only to return him safely four days later.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

He insists he never harmed or sexually assaulted the young boy, but the Crown said Hopley has a criminal history that includes a sexual assault on a five-year-old boy in 1985.

Hopley was supposed to have a date set for a dangerous offender hearing after a psychiatric assessment was completed, but the defence is now asking for its own assessment.
