MONTREAL, Que – The Montréal Insectarium will be closed to the general public until early summer 2011.

The city’s insect museum is undergoing a $1.2-million facelift to its permanent exhibitions, the first renewal project of its kind in over 20 years.

The Quebec government will fund the project.

A new permanent exhibition, We Are the Insects, will be unveiled when the redesigned museum opens in about six weeks.

In a news release, the museum says the new exhibit will be "on the cutting edge of entomological knowledge," allowing visitors to "explore the surprising, often unknown world of insects, and come away with a whole new perspective on this fascinating universe."

Coming up, nature enthusiasts can explore the intimate lives of butterflies at the 14th edition of the Butterflies Go Free exhibit, on from February 17 to April 25, 2011 at the Botanical Garden’s Main Exhibition Greenhouse.

Since it opened in 1990, the Montréal Insectarium has been a cornerstone educational facility in the field of entomology. The museum boasts one of the largest insect collections in Quebec, a scientific collection of 144,000 specimens and an educational collection with 25,000 specimens.

Each year, about 350,000 visitors attend the permanent and temporary collections at the Insectarium.
