EDMONTON- Bratwurst burgers, bourbon pecan pork, mini doughnuts, falafel, and French chocolate cake with caramel sauce were just a few items on the menu at Edmonton’s first What the Truck?! event of the season.
What the Truck?!- held at McIntyre Park in Old Strathcona Friday evening- featured food from 12 local food trucks. The event, which is held three times per year, started in 2011 after organizers fell in love with the food truck scene in San Francisco.
“It’s been really well received in Edmonton. Food trucks have been really, really growing,” said Co-organizer Mack Male. “And there’s a bunch of new ones this year, which is really exciting to see.”
Male says the event has become increasingly popular over the past few years, and so has the food truck movement in general, in Edmonton.

“On any given day, downtown at lunch time there’s a couple of food trucks out for you for options, and that didn’t happen a couple of years ago.”
“A food truck is the most accessible way for young entrepreneurs who are interested in food to get into the food business. The overhead and outlay for a restaurant is overwhelmingly expensive. This provides us with an outlet for research and development for food that we’re passionate about,” added Mark Bellows, owner and operator of The Local Omnivore food truck.
Hundreds of people lined up to get a taste of the wide variety of food offered at the event. Those in attendance say it’s all about getting together to try something new and different.
“I definitely come with an open mind. I try not to try things that I’ve tried before. Like, who has ever tried bacon caramels before? Nobody! They’re delicious!”
Male says social media has played a huge role in the food truck movement in Edmonton, which was proven Friday night as many foodies took to Twitter to share their experiences and pictures from the event.
