Emergency crews were called to the southwest corner of Markham and Ellesmere roads at around 3:10 p.m. with multiple reports shots were fired.

“[Officers] attended the scene and located a young male person suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound,” Toronto Police Insp. Susan Gomes told reporters Monday evening.

“Shortly thereafter, within 20 minutes, one male person was in custody.”

A Toronto Paramedics spokesperson told Global News the patient was being rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition. Police later said he died from his injuries

Gomes didn’t identify the victim, saying officers were still trying to notify his next of kin.

She said she wasn’t able to identify the person in custody or if the two knew each other.

It’s not clear what, if any, charges were being laid against the person.

The Toronto District School Board instituted a brief lockdown at Woburn Collegiate Institute shortly after the shooting.

Meanwhile, anyone with information was asked to call police at 416-808-7400.
