Letting your car idle for too long could soon get you a ticket.
Independent MLA Dave Taylor presented an anti-idling bill Tuesday afternoon. The legislation would allow police to ticket anyone who leaves their engines running for too long.
Under the bill, drivers would not be able to idle their vehicles for more than 3 minutes during a one hour period.
It would not be in effect if the weather dips to -23 degrees Celsius. Public transit and emergency vehicles would be exempt.
While some say the bill would be un-enforceable, Taylor says it’s a small step to helping the environment.
“This bill is trying to make a point,” said Taylor. “In part there are things we can do that are not going to radically change our lifestyles. They’re not going to radically affect the economy and make a positive impact on the environment and greenhouse gas emissions.”
The bill, if passed, would take effect January 1st, 2012 and would carry a fine of $100.
