In The Elevator: MMA trainer Curtis Brigham

When Winnipeg’s Roland Delorme fights at UFC 161, he’ll have trainer Curtis Brigham (a bantamweight champion in his own right) in his corner.

At 31, Brigham has an unusual amount of experience in mixed martial arts.  He began when he was 17 and even took eight years off fighting in the middle.  Now he fights and also trains others — he has more than 10 professional fighters under his watchful eye at the Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts.

One necessary skill for his fighters is “cutting weight” before fights.  For example, Delorme will drop from 150 pounds to the 135-pound limit in the week before UFC 161.  In the Elevator, Brigham tells us this kind of weight loss is not for everyone.
