Mandel declared winner

Stephen Mandel has been declared the winner of the election and will serve his third term as mayor of Edmonton.

Mandel defeated rival David Dorward by nearly twice as many votes and captured over 50 percent of the popular vote. Dorward conceded the race to Mandel in a speech given to his supporters.

Mandel and Dorward engaged in an election dogfight over the closure of the City Centre Airport, with Mandel determined to stay the course on its closure and Dorward adamantly opposed.

Dorward does say that what he did will make a difference in how council looks at issues. “We had a plan, we carried the plan out,” he said. “We certainly knew the issues we wanted to bring forward in this campaign and … I do believe that will make a difference."
