Bacteria outbreak contained to one RUH unit

SASKATOON – Staff at a Saskatoon hospital are battling an outbreak of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL).

Donna Wiens with the Saskatoon Health Region says the outbreak has been isolated to one unit in the Royal University Hospital.

She says the bacteria is spread through contact with body fluids but is not making lots of people sick.

She says the hospital is taking precautions to prevent further spread through extra cleaning, isolating people identified as carriers and emphasizing hand washing.
