The elimination of many teams from World Cup competition has disappointed viewers worldwide – some because they’re soccer fans and some because they enjoy watching the fit men in shorts and cleats.
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Cannavaro of Italy have drawn the ire of sportswriters, but as far as countless admirers are concerned they can do no wrong.
That’s why there are web sites, blogs and even magazine stories devoted to some of these athletes’ finer qualities.
Kickette.com, a web site devoted to all things “fun, fluffy and footie-related,” claims it is run by female journalists with a great appetite for the game itself. The site, however, focuses on the less athletic aspect of the sport and features topics like the “˜Finest Five’ and the “˜Hot Hall of Fame,’ which celebrates players for “a lifetime of dedicated deliciousness.”
In the June issue of the magazine Vanity Fair, some of soccer’s biggest stars showed their patriotism-and a lot more-by wearing underwear in their national team colours. Other media outlets, writers and bloggers indulged in their own “hot” and “sexy” observations. Both MSN.com and Marieclaire.com paid homage to the stars through photo galleries, while the daily web program PopSugar Rush highlighted the ten sexy players of the World Cup tournament in their “˜Girl’s Guide to the World Cup’ web video.
For the past two years, Jessica Spiegel, an American soccer fan and travel writer, has been submitting blog entries for the site WhyGoItaly that are aimed at readers not interested in yellow cards or offside calls. Spiegel recently wrote the fourth installment of ‘Hot Italian Soccer Players.‘ It focuses on the Italian team that competed at this year’s World Cup in South Africa. Yes, it includes material on every member of the team.
Global News Online recently talked to Jessica. Check out our interactive interview below:
