Teen axe-killer sentenced as an adult

A teenage boy who brutally murdered a Pizza Hotline employee was sentenced as an adult Thursday in a Winnipeg court.

The killer was 15 at the time of the brutal murder; his name can not be released until his sentencing is complete and decide where he will be incarcerated.

The teen pleaded guilty to second degree murder last year after robbing a Pizza Hotline on Concordia Avenue in May 2011 and hitting 54-year old delivery driver Gerald Crayford with an axe twice.

Crayford was brain dead and taken off life support shortly after.

Crayford’s family burst into tears and hugged each other when the judge sentenced the teen as an adult.

It comes with an automatic life sentence but the Crown and Defence will argue in July when he should be eligible for parole.

The Crown will ask for seven years while the Defence will ask for five.

The teen showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down but his family wept openly and his mother left the courtroom

During the sentencing hearing earlier this year, court heard the teen bragged to friends about killing someone, saying “it feels cool.”

Court heard his mother and grandmother helped him hide the axe by throwing it into a river north of Winnipeg.

The teen will be 18-years old in October.
