An ad that appeared briefly on a Winnipeg classified website has Manitoba native leaders outraged.
The ad appeared yesterday on UsedWinnipeg.com. It had at 465 views before it disappeared this afternoon.
The ad offers "Free: Native Extraction Service" and shows a picture of young aboriginal men.
It promises to relocate natives to their "habitat", and then identifies "Salter" or "the rez" as examples of drop-off points.
Manitoba’s northern chiefs’ organization plans to complain to the police and human rights commission.
“We consider it a hate crime, in which the advertisement itself indicates termination of a group of people. And that’s exactly what it says in the advertisement,” said Louis Harper, Corporate Counsel for Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc.
MKO says the young men pictured in the ad are award-winning filmmakers from Washington State who created a documentary about oil companies.
“The Aboriginal Youth in the photo have been unnecessarily victimized and we will not tolerate it, this is a reality that we see far too often as First Nation People,” said Grand Chief David Harper.
UsedWinnipeg.com is actually part of a nationwide chain of classified ad websites run by Black Press Group in Victoria.
A spokesperson told global news the ad violated the site’s terms of use and was taken down as soon as it was noticed.
