Pulling a cargo plane for the gift of sight

More than two dozen people took on the challenge of trying to pull a 60 tonne cargo plane at the fourth annual ORBIS Pull for Sight event in Richmond today.

Teams of 25 pulled a 757 FedEx cargo plane 12 feet for the fastest pull title at the event; which is aimed at helping the lives of 285 million visually impaired people around the world.

“Worldwide there are more than 39 million blind people and 90 per cent of them are in the developing world,” said Brian Klinzing from ORBIS International. “ And a vast majority of them don’t have to be blind, if they have access to quality medical care.”

In particular, the thousands of dollars raised at this even will go towards the ORBIS Kids Sight program. Not only is ORBIS trying to eliminate blindness in the developing world but is also providing treatment via their flying eye hospital.

ORBIS doesn’t solely fly in and provide treatment, the non-profit focuses on teaching, and training local doctors and caregivers in dozens of countries.

Over the past 4 years, the ORBIS Pull for Sight has raised $265,000; which will go towards giving visually impaired people a chance for a clearer future.
