Five people were taken to hospital following a chemical leak involving epoxy at the Siemens manufacturing facility in Peterborough on Thursday morning.
Around 8:40 a.m., emergency crews were called to the plant on Technology Drive for reports of a chemical spill.
Siemens’ Peterborough Milltronics Process Instruments facility specializes in designing and manufacturing measurement instruments for the process industries.
Epoxy is a resin often used in the manufacturing of plastics, paints, coatings and other products.
Peterborough Paramedics Deputy Chief Chris Barry tells Global News Peterborough that paramedics assessed eight people and transported five of them to Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
Barry said neither patient had any serious injuries and most were experiencing symptoms of nausea.
On Thursday afternoon Laura Heidbuechel, Siemens Canada spokesperson, told Global News Peterborough that the cause of the incident was a pipe hose burst which caused a small amount of chemical compound to leak.
She said the five employees taken to hospital have since been released with no health concerns.
“The Peterborough Fire Department has been through the entire building and has determined that there is no further risk to employees,” stated Heidbuechel.
In an email Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Labour says it was notified of a chemical spill at Siemens.
“A ministry inspector has been assigned and our investigation is ongoing,” the Ministry stated.
