WEST KELOWNA, B.C. – The mother of a girl who was killed at a house party in Peachland, B.C., three years ago says the teenager convicted of manslaughter will appeal her sentence.
Charrie Hyatt says that’s a self-serving and arrogant decision for someone who received a nine-month sentence in April for snuffing out her daughter’s life.
The name of the now-19-year-old woman convicted of the stabbing death cannot be published because she was underage at the time of the killing.
Ashlee Hyatt of West Kelowna was stabbed in the neck outside a house in June 2010 during a fight over a boy.
The accused testified in her own defence, and her lawyer told the jury Hyatt’s death was an accident.
The young woman who killed Hyatt was originally charged with first-degree murder, but that was later reduced to second-degree murder, before the jury finally settled on manslaughter. (CKFR)
