Watch: Racer comes to aid of fellow rider after accident at Ontario race track

TORONTO – Canadian racer Phil Wang did not to hesitate to help his fellow Formula 1200 racer Andrew Waring after an accident during a race in Shannonville, Ontario this past weekend.

Waring was on his last lap at the Annual Trillium Trophy Race on Saturday when he drove over what he described as “soft grass on the offside of the track,” causing his car to go off course.

“I was fighting for the win,” said Waring in an interview with Global News. “The accident occurred and I landed on the top of my head after the car flipped three times.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Wang posted a video of the aftermath of the accident on YouTube, with the title ‘Friends Don’t Let Friends Get Pinned Under Their Race Car,’ after his camera helmet filmed the incident Saturday. The video shows Wang pulling his vehicle over while several other racers, including Spencer Todd and Michael Iamundi, quickly come to Waring’s aid.

Waring said he does not remember all the details of the accident. Doctors told him he suffered a concussion and small tissue damage down his shoulder and back.

Waring said the Trillium Trophy Race is a smaller series and that those who participate have a close connection.

“Everyone is sort of like a family,” he said. “We all help each other out. Anyone would stop and help anyone in that series.”
