Saskatchewan government commemorates century farmers

Three-hundred-and-fifty-five Saskatchewan families are to be given century farm awards this year. File / Global News

SASKATOON – In a time when it may seem like the family farm is fading away, Saskatchewan is seeing 355 families celebrating working the same land for at least 100 years.

The awards, given out by the provincially owned Information Services Corporation, go to families who have continuously maintained the ownership of the same farm or ranch for more than 100 years.

Yesterday, a celebratory luncheon was held in Regina to honour a portion of those families, with luncheons to be held in Swift Current on Tuesday, and in Saskatoon on Thursday.

All families receive a free reproduction of their family’s original land grant or title, and they also receive an indoor wall plaque, or a cedar gate sign.

More than 3,200 awards have been handed out since 2007.
