Environment Ministers highlight water security at meeting of scientific minds

SASKATOON – Addressing a crowd of 800 scientists, policy makers and researchers, Environment Minister Peter Kent focused on the importance of proper resource management and allocation – honing in on water security.

“Not only does Canada have the third largest supply of freshwater in the world, we have the longest coastline in the world,” he said before the packed auditorium.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Saskatchewan alone has about 100,000 lakes. Water security was also top of mind for Ken Cheveldayoff, Saskatchewan’s environment minister.

“We recognize that water is an essential ingredient to our continued growth. We must have good water in our lakes and rivers to support the high quality of life we see for Saskatchewan’s future,” said Cheveldayoff.

Sustainability is merely one of the issues that will be tackled at the event, which will also examine climate issues across the country.
