There are certain things that just shouldn’t go in your garbage or blue bin. For everything else, there’s community drop-off events.
The brainchild of Take Pride Winnipeg, the first ever ‘Recyclathon’ was held at the Garden City Shopping Centre parking lot on Saturday in an effort to keep excess or non-recyclable junk out of the landfill.
Winnipeggers turned out in droves to drop off their old electronics, paint cans, antifreeze and light bulbs. Halfway through the four hour event, two semi trailers had already been filled.

The ‘old TV” pile appeared to be the most oft-recycled item.
“All of the stations are pretty popular but you can see the mound behind me, there’s huge TV’s, there was an interesting little TV, so things that have been sitting in the basement or garage for many many years. It’s good that people can finally dispose of them.” Said Devi Sharma, Old Kildonan Ward Councillor.
Sharma said people were lined up ready to drop off at 8:30 despite the fact the event didn’t officially start until 10:00.
Exact numbers of participants were not immediately available.
