Vancouver’s cruise ship season has begun

Downtown Vancouver just got a whole lot more congested.

Three cruise ships docked on Friday, bringing with them, more than 11,000 tourists .

The massive influx of people to the downtown core can be good and bad, depending on your perspective.

Normally two ships pull into port, but on Friday there was three. The taxi companies refer to it as Black Day – it’s something that usually happens three times a season.

Taxi drivers hit a bit of a snag early this morning, when ‘No Parking’ signs replaced ones that were stolen overnight along a block on Hastings Street. The space was supposed to be left open for waiting cabs. But with signs gone, vehicles started parking there, leaving cabs taking up a lane of traffic during the morning commute.

Every cruise call generates more than two million dollars in economic activity. Vancouver will see 235 cruise ships calls this year. Americans make up more than half of the cruise ship passengers, but international travellers are steadily growing.

Overall, there’s a 23 per cent increase in passengers from last year. Three cruise ships are also making a comeback to Vancouver, bringing with them thousands of more tourists willing to drop their dollars into the local economy.
