SASKATOON – The city has launched a new-age approach to alert Saskatoon residents of unplanned service interruptions via the internet.
“Given the city’s large social media network and the high engagement level of residents, it made sense to provide the option for users to share the alerts with their networks using social media, and it helps us broaden the reach of our message,” says Catherine Gryba, strategic and business planning manager.
The new online tool, Service Alerts, allows Saskatonians to find out about interruptions to civic services by using the city’s website.
Service Alerts will first start out covering power outages, leisure facilities, residential street sweeping and traffic detours.
“The alerts take only minutes to write and post, and posting can be completed from any location including from iPhones, iPads, and other mobile or home devices. All of this will help us spread the word about an unplanned service interruption, or a reminder about a planned service interruption, as quickly as possible.”
Residents can also subscribe to receive alerts on desired topics they wish to follow.
In the event of a major service interruption, the city will also use traditional communication methods such as public service announcements (PSA).
Once the pilot system is up and running smoothly, the city will look at expanding Service Alerts into other service areas.
