Mission man gunned down in 2007 likely killed by mistake: IHIT

A Mission man gunned down in 2007 was living next door to a targeted United Nations gangster and was likely killed by mistake, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team revealed Thursday.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound said investigators believed Timony Vernon Jones was an innocent victim of a gang war that was raging on the Lower Mainland.

Jones was killed on Feb. 25, 2007 just before 3:00 pm outside his house in the 7400 block of Murray Street.

At the time, he was living next door to UN member Duane Meyer, who was shot to death on May 8, 2008.

Pound said IHIT is still looking for information about the Jones’ killing and issued the public plea a day before what would have been Jone’s 35 birthday.

“Timothy’s family is left dealing with this tragedy and on special days, such as a birthday, it reminds families of the tremendous and senseless loss that homicide brings,” Pound said.

“Homicide investigations are not a race to the finish line. In several of the cases we investigate we will see charges and convictions occur many years after the homicide. What we need is that one bit of information that leads us to the person responsible.”

At the time, IHIT revealed that Jones came out of his residence to help two young females who appeared to be having car trouble.

He was seen looking under the the hood of their blue Honda Civic.

The girls then left in their vehicle and seconds later The a dark colored, newer SUV pulled up just south of Jones’ house/

“The vehicle backed up and Timothy walked towards it stopping at the passenger side window to talk with the occupants. He was immediately shot in the head by an occupant in the vehicle,” Pound said.

“At the time of this shooting Timothy was living next door to known gang associate, Duane Meyer. It is believed that the intended target was Mr. Meyer and that Timothy’s murder was as a result of mistaken identity. He was an innocent victim, with no criminal record or associations to gangs.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448.
