Homes evacuated as crews battle forest fires in New Brunswick

PERTH-ANDOVER, N.B. – About 200 homes have been evacuated in western New Brunswick as forest fires continue to burn.

In a press release, Mayor Terry Ritchie of Perth-Andover says people living near the Tobique First Nation left their homes overnight because of a nearby blaze.

Threes schools in Perth-Andover are closed for the day as a precaution — Andover Elementary School, Perth-Andover Middle School and Southern Victoria High School.

Ritchie says residents in nearby Craig Flats have also been warned to prepare for evacuations if necessary.

He says a health advisory has been issued for residents with breathing difficulties because of the smoke hanging in the air.

Ritchie says officials are hopeful rain in the forecast today will help firefighters extinguish the wildfires.
