UPDATE: Two killed, six injured in collision east of Grande Prairie

EDMONTON- Two people have been killed, and six others have been injured, in a serious two vehicle collision just east of Grande Prairie.

The collision happened shortly after noon Wednesday, on Highway 43 near the Hamlet of Bezanson.

Grande Prairie RCMP say a small car was heading south along Secondary Highway 733, crossing Highway 43, when it was struck by a pick-up truck travelling east along Highway 43.

Cpl. Roy Kennedy says five people were in the pick-up at the time. There were three people in the car, Kennedy said. He described the collision as “horrendous.”

RCMP confirm two people were pronounced dead at the scene. One person was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to a Grande Prairie area hospital, while five others were taken to the same hospital via ground ambulance, according to RCMP.

RCMP say an 89-year-old woman and a 55-year-old woman were killed in the collision. They were both from the Wanham/Spirit River area. Their names have not yet been released.

Eastbound traffic on Highway 43 was detoured around the scene for several hours Wednesday, as officers investigated the cause of the collision.

Bezanson is located approximately 30 kilometres east of Grande Prairie.
