The crash happened at Metis Trail N.E. and 128 Avenue N.E. at around 12:30 a.m.

Police said a 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 42-year-old man, was turning from southbound Metis Trail N.E. onto eastbound 128 Avenue N.E.

A black 2012 Hyundai, driven by a 21-year-old man, heading north on Metis Trail N.E. struck the Toyota, officers said.

Two women in the Toyota, a 65-year-old and a 31-year-old, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Toyota driver was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in stable condition with minor injuries, officials said.

A 70-year-old male passenger was taken to Foothills in life-threatening condition, according to EMS and police.

The Hyundai driver was not injured, police said.

Acting Sgt. Dan Rogers said the people in the vehicle with fatalities all belonged to one family and were on their way home.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the incident, according to Calgary police.

Rogers said the crash just happened to correspond with Canadian Road Safety Week, which runs May 14 to 20.

“We are focusing on all of the driving habits that are dangerous and that includes impaired driving: drug-impaired, alcohol-impaired, fatigue-impaired, distracted driving, aggressive driving and not wearing your seatbelt,” he said.

“Unfortunately, May long weekend always has the stigma of having a fatality and once again, unfortunately, it’s happened,” Rogers added.

“I don’t know how many innocent people have to die before we will figure out that drinking and driving kills. Pure and simple, it’s not a matter of question. This is 100 per cent predictable and preventable. Just don’t do it.”

The road was closed in all directions until 9:30 a.m., according to City of Calgary Transportation.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit gathered evidence, and once police have the report, they will determine if any charges will be laid.
