CALGARY – A number of sheriffs joined the crowd of striking prison guards outside the Calgary Courts Centre on Monday, after voting in favour of joining the picket line the day before.
The wildcat strike by hundreds of jail guards was triggered late last week, by the suspension of two employees at the Edmonton Remand Centre who complained about safety issues.
The union says provincial sheriffs in Edmonton and Calgary have now joined the strikes at 10 jails.
Officials are assuring the public it will be business as usual, saying Mounties and city police will be filling in to guard courtrooms and escort prisoners.
