SASKATOON – Saskatoon is growing, so too is the need for affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon has helped more than 50 families acquire their own home.
That number increased by 5 more on Friday in what was the organization’s largest key ceremony in its history. Twenty-eight people, 18 of them children, now have a new place to call home.
“Some of them have been waiting for quite awhile to move into their homes. They are really thrilled to be moving in. The first teo units, they’ll move in May 1 and the second two June 1,” said Barb Cox-Lloyd, Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon CEO.
Habitat for Humanity has become a much bigger organization in the past three years in Saskatoon. It’s currently working on 11 new homes and will be starting another 12 in the near future.
“We’re growing because there’s a growing need. There are people who fall between the cracks when we have a good economy so those people are the ones who need a hand up. These are all hard working people. They deserve to have a place to live and a good place to live,” said Cox-Lloyd.
The provincial government is contributing $250,000 towards this affordable housing project.
High housing costs all over the province have forced Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon to help surrounding communities as well. A home was dedicated in Humboldt in February and North Battleford will be next.
