The BC SPCA is rolling out a new program called Capacity for Care, which they say will allow shelters to take in more animals.
The program was piloted by the BC SPCA in 2012 and targets shorter stays and faster adoptions.
During the pilot program, there was a 15 per cent increase in adoptions and a decrease in an average animal’s length of stay, from 47 to 24 days.

Laureen Harper, the wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, visited the Vancouver shelter today for the launch of the program.
A key part of the program is new plastic portals installed between cages that allow a cat to move from one cage to another. The portals result in a doubling of space for each cat, but ensure each cat maintains their own food and litter area.
The portals were made possible by a donation from the Vancouver Foundation.
