Flames, Avs will square off in first round

CALGARY – The Calgary Flames will face the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

The Flames, who clinched the top seed in the Western Conference earlier this week, were locked into a matchup with Colorado after the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 3-0 on Saturday.

Calgary won all three of its games against Colorado this season.

The Avalanche clinched a playoff spot for the second year in a row on Thursday with a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

It marks the first time since 2006 Colorado has reached the playoffs in consecutive years.

The Avalanche haven’t won a playoff series since 2008.

The Flames are going to the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Calgary wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 loss against the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The Avalanche lost 5-2 to the San Jose Sharks in another season finale on Saturday.
