TORONTO – Pesky urban raccoons rummaging through your garbage bags may be a thing of the past, at least that’s what a new product promises to do.
Walmart Canada has announced it will begin selling a new and improved mint scented version of its large plastic garbage bags which it says will keep raccoons at bay.
The retailer insists mint has long been a home remedy for keeping rodents out of gardens and has teamed up with a company called Mint-X to create the Great Value Mint-X Raccoon repellent garbage bag.
“We’re very pleased to be providing our customers with a safe and innovative solution to what is often a very frustrating situation,” said Sandra Farwell, vice president of private brands at Walmart Canada in a media release.
The makers of the repellent bags say its effectiveness is linked to the anatomy of the animals, with the creatures being more irritated towards strong scents.
Gardening experts say there is no real proof behind the mint but smell deterrents can be effective.
“There’s products like hen manure or blood meal which are also fertilizers and beneficial for your lawn and it doesn’t harm the animal in any way, it’s just a smell deterrent which can keep them away,” said Hank deJong from Sheridan Nurseries.

The company claims the mint fragrance, which is naturally added in the manufacturing process, has proven to be extremely effective at repelling raccoons.
“Mint-X bags are already being used across the U.S., from New York to Los Angeles and they are proven to be effective, even against the toughest raccoons in North America,” said Jeff Dussich, chief operating officer of Mint-X in a media release.
