Spring cleaning an opportunity to practice fire safety: Waterloo Fire Rescue

Now that spring has officially sprung, it is time to begin the dreaded spring cleanup.

While most people will clean the house from top to bottom while also taking time to declutter their attics and garages, Waterloo Fire Rescue is also reminding residents to keep fire safety in mind.

“As residents embark on their annual spring cleanup, we encourage them to remember fire safety,” Waterloo Fire Rescue fire chief Richard Hepditch said in a statement.

Waterloo Fire has provided some tips to help people eliminate potential fire risks.

Kitchen

Waterloo Fire Rescue is reminding residents to clean filters above the stove and pull out your fridge so you can vacuum/dust the coils.

Barbecue

Get your barbecue set for summer by making sure you clean it properly, examine the fuel supply hose for cracks or damage, and look for leaks with a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap.

Throughout your house

Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors while also changing the batteries.

Residents can also take the time to reexamine their home escape plan or draw one up if they do not have one.

Finally, check the address number on the front of your house to make sure it is clearly visible from the street.
