Weyburn city council to reconsider group home proposal

Weyburn city council is rethinking its decision after rejecting a proposal last week to build a group home for the disabled in an upscale neighbourhood.

Members of council and city administration met with representatives from the Ministry of Social Services, Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, Weyburn Group Home Society and Terra Development on Monday, according to a statement released by the city on Tuesday.

It said they discussed “a path going forward to meet the needs of the Weyburn Group Home Society, their clients and the community of Weyburn.”

Weyburn city council was under fire last week after it rejected a proposal on March 11 to build a group home in one of the city’s new development, The Creeks.

Coun. Brad Wheeler used the word “stigma” to describe the feeling around housing people with disabilities in the area.

Wheeler issued a formal apology two days later in which he said he failed “miserably” at relaying a message on behalf of the Creek neighbourhood residents.

The Saskatchewan government has been vocal with their displeasure regarding council’s decision to reject the proposal.

Tuesday’s statement said the application will be brought back to council at the earliest possible date, March 25, to ensure a quick resolution.
