Construction site theft continues to be big business

SASKATOON – Saskatoon police are dealing with millions of dollars worth of equipment, supplies and tools stolen from constructions sites every year.

“It is mainly construction tools that people are interested in selling. These are mainly things they can turn around and sell for cash,” said Saskatoon Police Service spokesperson Alyson Edwards.

Every year it seems to be new neighbourhoods that are hit the hardest because of a lack of lighting, storage bins and security which are costly to supply.

“We have worked very hard on communicating with businesses and organizations and residents in general on how to secure their property. Even if it’s a new construction site how they can secure that area and try and prevent theft,” says Edwards.

Saskatoon police are urging employees and contractors to secure all materials and supplies and at the same time keep track of supplies and remove them once a job is finished.

“You try to order the lumber as you need to and try to order the material as you need too. Once it’s installed it makes it tougher for them to get out of the house so the time it takes (to get) they don’t want it they just want to take it,” says Regan Tameling of Westridge Homes.

Anyone with information on a robbery from a construction site is asked to contact Saskatoon police at 975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
