Freezing rain expected this weekend for Guelph area, Waterloo region

WATCH: Some areas of the GTA experienced sleet on Wednesday, while other areas saw freezing rain — two terms that are heard frequently during the winter months. Chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell breaks down the difference between the two terms – Feb 6, 2019

Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for the Guelph area and Waterloo region that calls for freezing rain on Saturday night.

The agency said the rain will begin late Saturday evening or even after midnight and could fall as freezing rain before the temperature rises above zero.

The area is expecting a low of -1 C that night.

The rain is expected to taper off late Sunday morning or early Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada said southwest winds gusting up to 80 km/h will develop on Sunday and continue for much of the day.

Residents are being asked to clear storm drains, as ponding is expected.
