Okanagan weather: Lingering snow clears, warmer days are near

After heavy snow blanketed the Okanagan, warmer and sunnier days will be sliding in.

From Wednesday night through Thursday morning, portions of the South Okanagan saw more than 12 centimetres of snow, with the Central Okanagan receiving 5 to 10 cm.

This is on top of the already unprecedented levels of snow that was already on the ground throughout the valley, bringing total amounts to up to 10 times the normal amount that would be reported in early March.

Once the light snow slid off to the north, skies started to clear and sunshine returned to much of the valley by mid-morning, as temperatures climbed above freezing.

After making it up to a daytime high warmer than any value seen since January, around 4 degrees, mostly clear skies overnight will allow conditions to cool back to around -7 by Friday morning.

Sunny breaks will start the day on Friday before clouds roll back in with a chance of flurries into the afternoon and evening, as temperatures pop back above freezing by a few degrees.

Valley cloud with the chance of a few pockets of flurries will stick around on Saturday before some late-day clearing moves in as the valley climbs to an afternoon high 3 or 4 degrees above freezing yet again.

An upper ridge will bring back sunny skies on Sunday with a cool start to the day, potentially into minus double digits, before heating up to around 4 degrees for a daytime high.

The next system and associated frontal boundary swings ashore early next week, bringing clouds back in on Monday with a chance of precipitation returning on Tuesday.

Following a cool Monday morning, daytime highs should spring back into mid-positive single digits for the entire second week of March.
