A three-year member of the Edmonton Police Service has been charged with assault.

The charge stems from an on-duty incident while the officer was reportedly dealing with a person in the area of Jasper Avenue and 103 Street in December 2017, the EPS said in a media release Tuesday afternoon.

Details of the incident were not released by police, but the EPS said the charge comes after an “in-depth investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch which was subsequently reviewed by Alberta Justice.”

Const. Matthew O’Mara is charged with one count of assault. He remains on active duty in a non-patrol capacity, the EPS said.

Because the matter is before the courts, the EPS declined to comment further on the incident.
