Every day this week, students donated a $2 coin, with the proceeds going towards books and teaching supplies at Riverview Elementary.
The school was forced to shut down after a pipe burst on the third floor, causing a major flood.

Laura Picteracupea, who teaches physical education at both schools, spearheaded the program.
“Right away, they wanted to help us out. We loved the idea,” Picteracupea said.
Both staff and students at Riverview say they appreciate the gesture from their fellow Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) students.

“My students at Riverview applauded. They were going to write thank you notes; it’s been really well received,” Picteracupea said.
Riverview Elementary teacher Scott Lambton says the news came as a surprise.
“Obviously, we were pretty shocked they were thinking about us in that way and we are extremely grateful,” Lambton said.

Since January, Riverview students have been separated into two schools, Verdun Elementary and Beurling Academy.
Construction on Riverview is expected to be completed by January 2020.
“It’s really been awesome, how the communities have formed this bond through this awful, disastrous thing, but I think in the future we can make a really good connection,” Picteracupea said.
Donations are also being accepted on the LBPSB website.
