Jepsen, Bieber up for Billboard Music Awards

TORONTO — A day after she picked up her first Juno Awards in Regina, singer Carly Rae Jepsen got word she’s up for nine Billboard Music Awards.

The B.C. pop star trails Rihanna by one nomination and beats British boy band One Direction by one.

Jepsen is nominated for Hot 100 Song, New Artist, Female Artist, Digital Songs Artist, Digital Song, Radio Song, Streaming Song (Audio), Streaming Song (Video) and Pop Song.

Taylor Swift, Maroon 5 and fun. each earned 11 nominations.

Ontario-born superstar Justin Bieber will take on Swift, Maroon 5, Rihanna and One Direction for the Top Artist award and is also up for Male Artist, Billboard 200 Artist, Social Artist, Pop Artist and Pop Album.

Toronto rapper Drake has three nods: Male Artist, Streaming Artist and Rap Artist.

Deadmau5, a native of Niagara Falls, Ont. who lives in Toronto, is up for EDM Artist, Dance Artist and EDM Album.

The Billboard Music Awards, hosted by Tracy Morgan, take place in Las Vegas on May 19. Performers include Bieber, Swift, Bruno Mars, Miguel and Prince.
