WHL Roundup: Friday, February 22, 2019

BRANDON, Man. – Jiri Patera made 37 saves as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Saskatoon Blades 6-2 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Luka Burzan, Ridly Greig, Zach Wytinck, Caiden Daley, Stelio Mattheos and Ben McCartney scored for the Wheat Kings (29-22-7), who extended their win streak to six games while also halting Saskatoon’s point streak at 13 contests.

Ryan Hughes and Max Gerlach found the back of the net for the Blades (37-14-8), who were 11-0-2 on their run.

Nolan Maier gave up five goals on 22 shots in two periods of work for the loss. Dorrin Luding played the third and had five saves in relief.

The Wheat Kings went 0 for 2 on the power play while the Blades went 2 for 4 with the man advantage.

RAIDERS 4 ICE 0

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Sean Montgomery scored twice and Ian Scott made 21 saves as the Raiders dealt Kootenay its seventh loss in a row.

Brayden Pachal and Ozzy Wiesblatt also scored while Brett Leason tacked on three assists for Prince Albert (48-8-3).

Curtis Meger turned away 26-of-30 shots for the Ice (11-38-9).

PATS 5 HITMEN 4 (OT)

REGINA — Logan Nijhoff scored the winner 30 seconds into the extra period as the Pats edged Calgary.

Garrett Wright, Duncan Pierce, Austin Pratt and Carter Massier also scored for Regina (18-38-3). Dean McNabb made 37 saves for the victory.

James Malm struck twice and Vladislav Yeryomenko also scored for the Hitmen (30-22-6), who got 25 stops from Jack McNaughton. Mark Kastelic had a goal and two assists before he was ejected for boarding at 8:06 of the third period.

WARRIORS 4 BRONCOS 2

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Brayden Tracey scored twice as Moose Jaw handed the Broncos their ninth consecutive defeat.

Justin Almeida and Tristin Langan also scored while Brodan Salmond only had to make 11 saves for the Warriors (32-16-8).

Ethan Regnier and Tanner Nagel hit the scoresheet for Swift Current (10-41-5). Riley Lamb stopped 33-of-36 shots in defeat.

OIL KINGS 2 REBELS 1

EDMONTON — Dylan Myskiw kicked out 29 shots as the Oil Kings scored twice in the opening period and hung on to beat Red Deer.

David Kope and Scott Atkinson supplied the Edmonton (33-18-8) offence.

Brandon Hagel kept the Rebels (29-23-5) from being blanked. Ethan Anders made 26 saves in Red Deer’s fourth straight defeat.

HURRICANES 6 TIGERS 3

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Jordy Bellerive scored twice and Nick Henry chipped in three helpers as the Hurricanes handed Medicine Hat its fifth straight loss.

Taylor Ross, Jake Elmer, Logan Barlage and Jake Leschyshyn also scored for Lethbridge (31-17-10). Carl Tetachuk made 31 saves for the victory.

Corson Hopwo struck twice and Ryan Chyzowski had the other for the Tigers (31-23-5). Mads Sogaard stopped 31-of-36 shots in a losing cause.

COUGARS 2 BLAZERS 1 (SO)

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Ethan Browne and Vladislav Mikhalchuk scored in the shootout as Prince George edged the Blazers to snap a 17-game losing streak.

Josh Maser scored in regulation for the Cougars (17-35-7), who got 41 saves from Taylor Gauthier.

Zane Franklin replied for Kamloops (22-28-6). Dylan Ferguson stopped 31 shots in a losing cause.

LANGLEY, B.C. — David Tendeck made 26 saves as Vancouver shut out Victoria.

Kaleb Bulych, Seth Bafaro, Lukas Svejkovsky and Justin Sourdif scored for the Giants (40-14-3).

Brock Gould turned away 30 shots for the Royals (30-25-3).

ROCKETS 4 CHIEFS 3 (SO)

SPOKANE, Wash. — Nolan Foote scored once in a regulation and again in the shootout as Kelowna toppled the Chiefs.

Leif Mattson and Alex Swetlikoff also had regulation-time goals for the Rockets (25-29-5), who got 40 saves from James Porter.

Riley Woods, Luke Toporowski and Luc Smith found the back of the net for Spokane (30-19-7). Bailey Brkin turned aside 27 shots in defeat.

AMERICANS 4 WINTERHAWKS 2

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Beck Warm made 34 saves, including one on a penalty shot from WHL top scorer Joachim Blichfeld in the third, to lead Tri-City over Portland.

Samuel Huo, Parker AuCoin, Krystof Hrabik and Nolan Yaremko supplied the Americans (33-21-3) offence.

Jared Freadrich and Cody Glass scored for the Winterhawks (36-17-6). Joel Hofer stopped 27 shots in defeat.

THUNDERBIRDS 3 SILVERTIPS 2 (OT)

EVERETT, Wash. — Jarret Tyszka potted the winner at 2:24 of overtime as Seattle got by the Silvertips.

Roddy Ross turned aside 39 shots while Nolan Volcan and Andrej Kukuca also scored for the Thunderbirds (24-28-6). Defenceman Cade McNelly was given a major and game misconduct for checking to the head at 7:18 of the second.

Wyatte Wylie and Jalen Price had the Everett (41-14-4) goals. Dustin Wolf turned away 27 shots in a losing cause.
