Top three things to do around Winnipeg the weekend of February 16

WATCH: The funds from this year's Wild Winter Canoe Race will go towards both the DASCH Foundation Inc. and the St. Amant Foundation – Feb 4, 2019

With her weekly pick of fun things to do on the weekend, here is the rundown from Global News Morning’s Kahla Shea.

This weekend seems extra special — it could be because it is either a 3- or 4-day weekend (for those whose kids had Friday off), or maybe it’s thanks to all these great events.

1. Wild Winter Canoe Race

Shaw Park is full of snow right now and you really can’t ask for better conditions for a canoe race.

Yep, that’s right — a Wild Winter Canoe Race — in support of the St. Amant and DASCH Foundations.

This Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.,  60 five-person teams will “foot-paddle” their way to the finish line.

It’s free to watch and there’s so much more than the race

There’s also a heated food court and bar to enjoy, the SnowTube Fam Jam with games and contests, there’s even indoor washrooms, so you have nothing to worry about!

You can’t go wrong with supporting great community causes like The St. Amant and DASCH Foundations.

2. Ringette on the River

Full disclosure – I did play ringette as a kid. My mom was even our coach for a while.

While I did make the move to hockey, (a fact that I was a little scared to share with the southwest ringette reps that came into our studio for an interview), Lori and Angela were so great, they actually have me wanting to get back into the sport just so I can hang out with these incredible women.

WATCH: Try a new sport for free

If you’ve ever thought about joining a team or maybe you’re looking for a new hobby, this weekend is your chance to try out ringette for free.

Two rinks will be set up, one with local players showing off their skating and stick handling skills. The other, a rink full of newbies that want to try the sport out.

Organizers said they’ll bring all the equipment, all you need to bring is your desire to try something new.

More information can be found on their website.

3. Hockey, heroes, heritage

With this being the Louis Riel Day long weekend, it is a great time for each of us to take some time to reflect on Manitoba history. True North Sports + Entertainment are doing just that with a couple games this weekend celebrating Indigenous culture.

The Winnipeg Jets WASAC (Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre) Night is Saturday and the Manitoba Moose Follow Your Dreams Day is Sunday.

Leticia Spence, a super talented graphic design student from Pimicikamak First Nation created two absolutely stunning logos for both the Jets and the Moose that honour different Indigenous cultures.

There’s also local Indigenous entertainment, a ceremonial puck drop and 500 Indigenous students will participate in a meet and greet with Indigenous NHL alumni.

WATCH: Hockey, hockey, hockey!

Monday may be a holiday but the Moose aren’t taking the day off and neither are the superheroes!

Have a great weekend everyone!
