Snowfall warning continues for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley as more snow falls Tuesday

The snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley continued on Tuesday.

The snow is expected to fall on the region throughout Tuesday and into the evening.

“The snow let up for several hours overnight but we’ll have periods of snow for the morning and right into the mid-to-late afternoon at least,” Global News meteorologist Mark Madryga said.

“I’m looking for another five, maybe up to 10 centimetres of snow in Metro Vancouver, closer to 10 in the Fraser Valley. It will be more widespread there. And also up 10 cm on southern Vancouver Island by day’s end.”

Madryga said it will be drier Wednesday.

“There’ll be a bit of afternoon snow melt but we’ll start the day tomorrow at -4 C so some icy roads are likely,” he added.

The snowfall warning is in effect for the Fraser Valley, Greater Victoria, inland Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, the Southern Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, west Vancouver Island and Whistler.

As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, Vancouver has received five centimetres of snow, Abbotsford has received 11 centimetres, Victoria has received 23 centimetres in total and Nanaimo has received 20 centimetres in total.

At Vancouver International Airport, crews were dealing with wintry weather conditions.

Staff at the airport said overnight snowfall accumulation had been cleared from runways. Current runway conditions are bare and wet, which is optimal for takeoffs and landings.

Passengers were encouraged to check with their airlines for current flight timing and status before coming to the airport.
