Valentine’s Day: Name cockroach after past lover and watch zoo feed it to animals

You’re in luck if you thought your last boyfriend was a “cockroach” of a guy.

The El Paso Zoo, in N.M., wants you to name a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach after past heartbreakers and watch the bug, or bugs, get fed to some of the zoo’s wildlife.

“The meerkats love to get cockroaches as a snack and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by feeding them a cockroach named after your ex,” Sarah Borrego, the zoo’s event coordinator, told CBS News.

Think of it as a creepy-crawly, violent version of Phoebe Buffay’s “Bad Boyfriend” cleansing ritual during the first season of the hit sitcom Friends.

The zoo called the campaign “Quit Bugging Me” in a Facebook post and advertised access to a webcam on Valentine’s Day to watch the carnage unfold.

Name submissions can be messaged to the El Paso Zoo via Facebook by Feb. 10. The names will be confirmed by the zoo one day later.

Tamarinds and marmosets will join meerkats at the dining table because the popularity of the event has taken off, according to NBC.

For the insect-lovers and pacifists, England’s Hemsley Conservation Centre is fundraising with a similar option, minus the feeding.

“We are highlighting these creatures through our ‘name a cockroach programme’ (we think adopt is a little too strong, after all — you probably don’t want to adopt your friend’s ex) to raise money for our projects at the zoo,” the HCC said on its website.

Back in El Paso, there’s no word on how the cockroaches will be prepared for the Valentine’s Day feast.

But remember the proverbial saying, “revenge is a dish best served cold.”
