Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for several eastern Ontario regions, including for the Kingston, Napanee and the Prince Edward County areas.
The weather agency expects freezing rain and ice pellets during the day on Wednesday.
According to Global Kingston’s weather specialist Bill Hall, Kingston will see freezing rain throughout the evening with some ice pellets, which may only slow down on Thursday morning. As the day progresses on Thursday, the Kingston region could see freezing mist and drizzle, but freezing rain is meant to pick back up again in the evening for about an hour until it switches to just rain, Hall says.
Temperatures are supposed to dip below freezing again on Friday, with high winds and a chance of flurries.
Environment Canada is warning of hazardous travelling conditions, especially on untreated surfaces, which could become icy.
WATCH: Kingston challenged by icy conditions after freezing rain
Although several school buses were cancelled in the Kingston region on Wednesday morning, several school boards in the area asked parents to come pick up their children due to the possibility of freezing rain. Although schools are staying open, the boards are encouraging parents to pick up their children as soon as possible.
St. Lawrence College and Queen’s University cancelled evening classes and all branches of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library closed at 2 p.m., as did the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and area.
Environment Canada is warning those travelling that conditions may be hazardous so they should take extra care while driving.
