Frostbite alert issued for Peterborough area

Health officials have issued a frostbite alert for the Peterborough area on Wednesday.

Peterborough Public Health on Wednesday issued a third frostbite alert of the season as temperatures with the windchill are expected to drop to -29 on Wednesday evening and continuing until Thursday afternoon.

The health unit is advising residents to take precautions since exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 to 30 minutes. They advise wearing clothing in layers with a wind-resistant outer layer.

In the city, the One Roof Community Centre is extending its hours of service from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday (normal hours are noon to 7 p.m.).

One Roof, which works on behalf of the City and County of Peterborough, is on 99 Brock St.

The City of Peterborough changed the temperature threshold for extending warming room service hours to -15 C from -27 C with the wind chill, effective Jan. 1.

Emergency after-hours services related to an emergency shelter are available through the city’s social services by calling 705-926-0096 or online.
