A West Kelowna teenager who killed her friend during a drunken house party has been sentenced to nine months in custody followed by another nine months to be served in the community under direct supervision.
The girl, who was 16 at the time, stabbed Ashlee Hyatt, 16, in the neck at a Peachland house party in 2010.

The girl, who cannot be named because she was a youth at the time, was charged with second degree murder but convicted of manslaughter.
At trial, the accused claimed the stabbing was self-defence.
The Crown had been asking for the maximum sentence of three years under the Youth Criminal Justice Act – two years in prison and one year to be served in the community under supervision.

The defence had been asking for no jail time.
The girl will be on probation for 18 probation once she serves her 18 month sentence.
She’s also been banned from possessing firearms for 10 years.
